How it works:

Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase during cholesterol synthesis in the liver

Dosage Form: Tablet Tablet - 1mg, 2mg, 4mg

Common Usage: Lowering cholesterol, Prevention of cardiovascular events

Precautions:

Pregnancy

Pitavastatin may cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant patients based on the mechanism of action. Discontinue pitavastatin when pregnancy is recognized. Alternatively, consider the ongoing therapeutic needs of the individual patient.

Lactation

Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in a breastfed infant, based upon the mechanism of action, advise patients that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with pitavastatin

Warnings

"Contraindicated: Hypersensitivity to drug or its excipients, active liver disease, persistent unexplained elevations of hepatic transaminases, concurrent use with cyclosporine, pregnancy, lactation Warnings: Myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, increases in HbA1c and fasting serum blood glucose levels, liver enzyme abnormalities"
