Prednisone for me, was prescribed to help manage persistent respiratory inflammation and a rash which at one point covered my whole body and was really horribly itchy and uncontrollable, While it effectively reduced respiratory inflammation and was, at one point literally the only thing keeping my skin under control so that I could function. I did not plan to be on it for as long as I have been. it comes with a lot of side effects and has the potential to cause great damage to the body, particularly if you have to take high doses or be on it a long time like I did.
Just recently, I have been able to start weaning off of it in a way that gives me hope I can stay off of it and start to reverse some of the damage done to my body – particularly around weight gain, muscle strength, and bone as well as overall metabolic health.
It’s cheap enough and easy to obtain for short courses where it is safe, but for longer term treatment, it can be a fight, even if it is the only thing helping. The benefits must be balanced with the risks and it’s not just something you can stop taking cold, if you have been on it for a while. You need guidance and supervision through the whole thing really. There are better alternatives long term if they work for you. I would encourage the use of the medication, but also an open, continuous conversation with your care team so that you have a plan in place and can take the lowest dose needed, and come off of it as quickly as possible.
