Atorvastatin
Overview
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) What is atorvastatin (Lipitor). Atorvastatin is part of a class of drugs commonly referred to as statins. Its role is to reduce the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Cholesterol is comprised of HDL, the “good” cholesterol, and LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. The body uses cholesterol to make various hormones and other substances. However, if a person has too much LDL, it can cause a buildup in the arteries, leading to stroke, heart attack, or other health problems.

How it works:
Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase during cholesterol synthesis in the liver
Dosage Form: Tablet Tablet - 10mg, 20mg, 40mg, 80mg ; Oral suspension - 20mg/5mL
Common Usage: Lowering cholesterol, Prevention of cardiovascular events
Precautions:
Pregnancy
Atorvastatin may cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant patients based on the mechanism of action. Discontinue atorvastatin when pregnancy is recognized. Alternatively, consider the ongoing therapeutic needs of the individual patient.
Lactation
Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in a breastfed infant, based upon the mechanism of action, advise patients that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with atorvastatin
