CompendiRx Topic(s): Brain and Nerves, Fatigue
Dosage Form: Tablet Oral Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC): 1000 mg, 4x per day (https://isom.ca/article/an-orthomolecular-protocol-for-long-covid/); oral solution and intravenous versions are also available
Common Usage: Improve mitochondrial function
How it works
L-carnitine, and a similar compound, acetyl-l-carnitine, both work to improve mitochondrial function. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell that generates chemical energy to fuel the cell’s processes. Mitochondrial damage is linked to early aging as well as neurodegeneration. Carnitine, and acetyl-l-carnitine, have an important mitochondrial function.
Pregnancy
Yes (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4464594/). Because carnitine deficiency is associated with serious complications in pregnancy, pregnant women are advised to get sufficient carnitine.
Lactation
Proceed with caution; carnitine use in women who are breast-feeding should be weighed against the potential exposure of the infant to increased carnitine intake.
