How it works:

Gingko biloba, a vast source of antioxidants, is well-known for its health-promoting effects on the brain and on vasculature, especially to increase blood flow throughout the body. Gingko biloba has been used to treat memory impairment, cognitive function, edema, inflammation, oxidative stress following traumatic brain injury, neurodegeneration, stroke, and vasooclusive disorders. It has also been used as an anti-aging supplement. Based on these uses, scientists propose that gingko biloba may work through antioxidant, neurotransmitter modulatory, and anti-coagulant properties.

Dosage Form: Tablet Oral - N/A

Common Usage: Known for its effects on brain (e.g., treating memory impairment) and vasculature (e.g., treating vasooclusive disorders, stroke, etc.)

Precautions:

Pregnancy

Gingko biloba should be used with caution in pregnancy, and avoided in the last trimester, since its anti-platelet properties can lead to increased bleeding time.

Lactation

Safety of gingko biloba is unknown during breastfeeding, so it’s best to avoid gingko biloba during lactation.

Warnings

Scientists urge caution for patients taking coagulants who want to take gingko biloba. Therefore, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a gingko biloba regimen if you are taking coagulants .
