How it works
Vitamin D plays a role in bone health, due to its importance in the metabolism of calcium. Relevant to Long COVID, Vitamin D’s role in immune function is well-established. It plays a role not only in both innate and acquired immunity, but also in the immune response to viruses. Vitamin D is linked to a lower risk of unchecked inflammation and cytokine storm in older patients with COVID-19.

Since having covid, and in relation to some of the other medicines I now have to take to manage symptoms – I had been struggling with persistent fatigue, itchiness, heart palpitations and muscle weakness, but my primary care physician was not entirely helpful. After a specialist finally mentioned I may have a vitamin D deficiency, new blood work showed they were corrected and my deficiency was extreme. Such low levels of vitamin D can contribute to all of the symptoms I was having, with or without long covid, so it was worth trying to correct – but I needed more than a standard daily dose.
Under medical guidance, I started taking a high dose of vitamin D daily. Within 3 months, my blood work showed movement in the right direction and within 6 months, I was in the normal range. Early on after beginning the high dose though, I began to notice a significant improvement in my skin and the itchiness, as well as my fatigue. Now, I generally take a regular daily dose, with a bit extra if blood work shows a substantial dip for some reason. It is extremely affordable as well, but quality is important.
Vitamin D also helps regulate the immune system in some ways and having sufficient levels helps keep in check what covid has tried to wreck within me as far as that goes. It’s only one piece of my treatment, and I’m so grateful to have found a solution that has made such a positive impact on my life.
