Cardioselective Beta-1 adrenergic receptor inhibitor
Pregnancy
Exposure to beta-blockers during pregnancy may increase the risk for adverse events in the neonate. If maternal use of a beta-blocker is needed, fetal growth should be monitored during pregnancy and the newborn should be monitored for 48 hours after delivery for bradycardia, hypoglycemia, and respiratory depression
Lactation
The manufacturer recommends monitoring the breastfed infant for adverse events such as bradycardia; constipation; diarrhea; and dry mouth, skin, or eyes when metoprolol is administered to a mother who is a slow metabolizer. Use of a beta-blocker other than metoprolol may be preferred in lactating patients
